Major cardiac care facility opens in North Nazimabad

Saifee Hospital’s new 11-storey wing adds 75 beds and full range of advanced heart treatment to District Central

KARACHI: Karachi’s healthcare network got a major boost on Saturday evening with the inauguration of an 11-storey dedicated Cardiac Wing at Saifee Hospital in North Nazimabad, District Central.

The new wing is designed as a purpose-built centre for comprehensive cardiovascular care, consolidating emergency response, diagnostics, interventional cardiology, cardiac surgery, intensive care, inpatient recovery and rehabilitation in one facility.

The project was developed under the patronage of Dr Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, spiritual leader of the Dawoodi Bohra community. It adds significant capacity to a privately run hospital that already serves approximately 360,000 patients annually and nearly 1,000 visitors daily through its emergency and outpatient departments.

Construction of the wing began in early 2022. The 11-storey facility has been equipped with next-generation medical technology and includes 75 dedicated cardiac beds, advanced catheterisation laboratories, specialised cardiac operation theatres, a state-of-the-art surgical intensive care unit and a dedicated cardiac rehabilitation center. Hospital management said the intent is to provide timely, specialised treatment for heart patients without requiring referrals across multiple locations.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb jointly inaugurated the Cardiac Wing. The ceremony was held at the Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah University Auditorium in North Nazimabad and was attended by Shahzada Qusai Vajihuddin, representing Dr Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, Provincial Minister Riaz Hussain Shah Shirazi, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab, senior healthcare professionals, and members of the Dawoodi Bohra community.

Following the inauguration, the Chief Minister toured various sections of the facility and was briefed on its advanced equipment and clinical systems. Addressing the gathering, he described the project as “a major advancement in specialised healthcare services and a vital investment in saving lives.” He noted that “District Central urgently needed a modern cardiac facility of this nature. For heart patients, time is extremely valuable, and reaching a hospital quickly can save lives.”

The Chief Minister also placed the new wing in the context of Sindh’s wider cardiac infrastructure. He said the province already takes pride in institutions such as the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases and the Sindh Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, which together provide around 2,100 beds.

The Saifee wing, he said, would complement the existing public cardiac care network by adding private-sector capacity in one of the city’s most densely populated districts.

Federal Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb praised the addition as “a valuable gift to the people of Karachi.” He stressed that sustainable development must reach ordinary citizens, particularly in health, and expressed confidence that facilities such as this would strengthen the healthcare landscape and serve generations to come.

Shahzada Qusai Vajihuddin, representing the community’s leadership, welcomed guests and shared the vision behind the project. He said the initiative reflects a commitment to providing healthcare facilities that meet high international standards while remaining accessible to people from all walks of life.

Saifee Hospital was established by Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin in memory of Dr Syedna Taher Saifuddin. Hospital management said the Cardiac Wing marks another chapter in the institution’s journey as one of Karachi’s leading multi-specialty healthcare providers.

With the Cardiac Wing now operational, Saifee Hospital significantly expands its role in specialised care in central Karachi. For a city where demand for cardiac services continues to grow, the facility represents a major addition to both infrastructure and clinical capacity.

The emphasis on integrating emergency care, advanced intervention, surgery and rehabilitation under one roof aligns with global best practice for managing cardiovascular disease, which remains one of the country’s leading health challenges.
