DOGANA honours DUHS VC with Lifetime Achievement Award

KARACHI: Vice Chancellor of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), Professor Jahan Ara Hassan, has been awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by the Dow Graduates Association of North America (DOGANA). The honour was conferred during DOGANA’s annual summer convention held earlier this month in Dallas, Texas.

According to a DUHS press release, the university administration congratulated Prof Hassan on the international recognition, calling it a proud moment for the institution. An alumna of Dow Medical College’s 1989 batch and DUHS’s first PhD graduate, Prof Hassan has dedicated over three decades to medical education, research, and institutional leadership.

Speaking after receiving the award, Prof Hassan described the recognition as a deeply meaningful milestone in her professional journey. She dedicated the award to her teachers, colleagues, students, and patients who supported her throughout the years.

The press release noted that Prof Hassan is the first HEC-approved PhD supervisor in gynecology in Pakistan and has led impactful research in women’s health. Her academic work includes more than 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals, and she has held key academic and administrative roles at DUHS and the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, she led DUHS Hospital through a particularly challenging period, serving as Medical Superintendent and later as Director of ICU and OT Complex. Her leadership, the statement added, contributed to the hospital’s accreditation by the Sindh Healthcare Commission and notable improvements in patient safety.

Currently serving as Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof Hassan has previously served as Pro-Vice Chancellor and Director of Ojha Campus. Her tenure has seen the approval of several new postgraduate fellowship programs, with continued focus on transparency and academic growth.

In her message to young healthcare professionals, especially women, she urged them to pursue their goals with passion, integrity, and a spirit of support for others.

KU syndicate greenlights SHEC building on campus, despite reservations

By Mukhtar Alam KARACHI: The University of Karachi (KU) syndicate accepted a request from the Sindh Higher Education Commission (SHEC) to construct a complex on a two-acre prime land, despite some members' reservations. A four-member committee, headed by Engineer Memon Abdul Jabbar, will finalise the proposed land transfer modalities for the consideration of syndicate. The committee comprises three syndicate members, including two government appointees and a provincial government nominee. Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi chaired the meeting, addressing concerns raised by members, on August 31. According to a KU press release, the Sindh Higher Education Commission (SHEC) requested two acres of land for its building. University of Karachi syndicate meeting mired in controversy

IV Report KARACHI: The sixth meeting of the University of Karachi's syndicate for 2024, held on October 31, was marked by intense debate on several issues, including the promotion of 54 university officers to higher grades. A senior faculty member, Dr Riaz Ahmed, a syndicate member, expressed concerns that the university administration applies different criteria for promoting teaching and non-teaching staff. Despite the syndicate approving promotions for over 50 officers in grades 18 to 20, Dr Ahmed pointed out to the chair of the meeting, Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid M Iraqi, that the departmental promotion committee violated the syndicate's set policy by not including a syndicate member in the promotion committee, as decided in 2018.
