JSMU honours senior alumni with Lifetime Achievement Awards

KARACHI: Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) presented awards to seven of its distinguished senior alumni in recognition of their contributions to surgical innovation, clinical excellence, and medical education at a ceremony held on April 19. The event also featured a video message from renowned urologist Prof Dr Adib-ul Hasan Rizvi, founder and director of the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT).

JSMU Vice Chancellor Prof Amjad Siraj Memon conferred gold medals and certificates—instituted as the JSMU Lifetime Achievement Awards—on the honoured physicians, who have significantly transformed patient outcomes nationwide. A university handout issued on April 20 noted that these awards will continue to be presented in the future.

Among the award recipients were Dr Altaf Hussain Hashmi, Professor of Urology at SIUT; Dr Shahid Sami, Professor of Cardiology affiliated with South City Hospital and the Aga Khan University Hospital; Dr Rubina Hussain, Professor of Gynecology at Ziauddin Hospital; and Dr Aasim Ahmed, Professor of Nephrology at The Kidney Centre. They received their awards in person to warm applause from the audience.

Three other awardees—Dr Tanveer Rab, Cardiologist and Professor of Medicine at Emory University, Atlanta; Prof Dr Noshad A Shaikh, General Surgeon at South City Hospital, former Secretary of the Sindh Health Department, and former Vice Chancellor of Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences, Jamshoro; and Dr Qaiser Sajjad, ENT Specialist and former Secretary General of the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA)—were represented by colleagues or family members.

The ceremony was attended by prominent healthcare professionals, including cardiologist Prof Hamid Shafqat, pediatrician Prof Zeenat Isani, gynecologist Prof Sadiqa Jaffery, pathologist Prof Dr Alay Hasan Zaidi, and gynecologist Prof Dr Hasan Fatima Jafri, who were invited as guests of honor.

In his video message, Prof Adib-ul Hasan Rizvi praised JSMU’s pivotal role in producing healthcare leaders who have improved patient outcomes across Pakistan.

Addressing the audience, JSMU VC Prof Memon stated: “It is a matter of pride to honor the alumni of Sindh Medical College who have served humanity with compassion.” He emphasised the university’s commitment to continuing such ceremonies to recognise alumni achievements.

In her introductory remarks, Dr Rahat Naz, Chairperson of Alumni Affairs, said JSMU’s esteemed alumni have made significant contributions in their respective fields by pioneering new surgical techniques, delivering exceptional patient care, and mentoring future generations of healthcare professionals.

Dr Javed Suleman, Interventional Cardiologist and alumnus of Sindh Medical College, and JSMU Registrar Dr Azam Khan also addressed the gathering. During the ceremony, the JSMU Vice Chancellor presented an honorary award to the SIUT delegation in recognition of Prof Dr Rizvi’s outstanding contributions to healthcare, the JSMU handout added.
