JSMU awards degrees to 505 graduates

KARACHI: Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU), Karachi, awarded degrees to 505 bachelor's and master's graduates from different programmes, including those belonging to the very first batch of the Doctors of Physiotherapy (DPT) programme of the university, at its sixth convocation held at a city hotel on December 18. This milestone brought the total number of outgoing students since the university's inception to 3,000.

Starting with Sindh Medical College, which was upgraded to the status of a university in 2012, JSMU encompasses over a dozen institutions, with an enrolment of about 6,000 students. 

The convocation celebrated the accomplishments of graduates of the classes of 2023-24 from MBBS (281 graduates), BDS (53), Pharm D (94), BSN (33), BBA-Hons (4), BBA HCM (3), and BS Public Health (9), MS Public Health (11) and others.

JSMU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Amjad Siraj Memon, along with Registrar Dr M Azam Khan and senior deans, awarded medals and honors to outstanding graduates. Top performers received 19 gold, 7 silver, and 5 bronze medals.

According to a JSMU handout, the best graduate titles were awarded to Dr Muhammad Aizaz Ur Rehman (MBBS) and Dr Ameera Omar (BDS). Other notable graduates included Dr Areeba Khan (Pharm D), Huraira Ahmed (BSN), and Dr Hira Naveed (DPT).

Registrar Azam Khan administered the oath, emphasising the importance of upholding professional ethics and serving humanity. Dr Marium Yousuf made the valedictory speech.

The Best Teacher awards were given to Professors Amna Rehana and Muhammad Azhar Mughal, Associate Professors Dr Shaheen Parveen and Dr Shehla Imam, Assistants Professors Dr Ihsan Ahmed and Dr Bushra Hana, and Lecturers Dr Anum Perwa and Dr Saima Ibad.

In his convocation address, VC Dr Siraj Memon pointed out to the graduates that they were the torch bearers of knowledge, empathy and progress. In addition, he highlighted the achievements of JSMU during his tenure as vice chancellor mentioning the launch of PhD programme in Public Health, Biochemistry and Dentistry and the approval of the advanced pharmacy discipline.

He also acknowledged the induction of over 100 clinical faculty members and the inauguration of the first Vascular Surgery Unit.

Professor Dr Huma Ali, Chairperson of the Convocation Committee, emphasised the significance of the convocation day, celebrating perseverance, dedication, and academic excellence. “Graduates are the future of the healthcare,” she added extending gratitude also to the efforts of faculty, staff, and organisers for making the convocation a memorable event.
