SIUT trains 190 student volunteers

KARACHI: The Sindh Institute of Urology and
Transplantation (SIUT) has trained another batch of 190 student volunteers in
community service activities, bringing the total number of trainees to 7,190
since 2006.
The students belonging to various schools are in
the process of their matriculation and intermediate or O/A-level education,
took a 30-hour training course at SIUT.
The SIUT programme's course was designed to
help participants become conscientious members of society when they enter
practical life.
The purpose was to train them to have
compassion for the less fortunate members of society when they enter practical
life, said a communication of the institute.
The students were handed certificate at a ceremony held at the institute in the presence of senior physicians associated with SIUT, parents of the volunteers and representatives of city’s educational institutions.
SIUT Director Prof Dr Adib Rizvi in his brief
remarks said that it was very encouraging to see the young generation
participating in the programme. “The lessons learned from these programme will
go a long way in helping them become more responsible citizens.”
The training programme was initiated in 2006
and is held during summer and winter vacations of educational institutions.
These students were assigned to various units
and wards of the SIUT hospital including transplant, dialysis, robotic surgery,
nursing, radiology, radiotherapy, and related medical services where they
interacted with the patients, doctors and para medics and medical social
welfare officers.
They were also trained in medical skills, like vital signs measurements, first aid training, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) procedure.
Participants in the SIUT’s week-long course
were briefed on the institute's basic philosophy which is aimed to mitigate the
suffering of the masses without any discrimination of cast, color, creed and
without any financial burden, according to the communication.
“The training week featured multiple lectures on various medical topics including biomedical ethics, motivational talks focusing on career building, emphasising empathy and compassion for the underprivileged population.”
