KU observes World Mental Health Day

IV Report
KARACHI: The University of Karachi (KU) marked World Mental Health Day on October 10, highlighting the importance of addressing mental health issues and promoting well-being in all aspects of life. Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi emphasised the need to prioritise mental health and well-being equally at home and in the workplace, stating that "good mental and physical health is very important for a society as it benefits not only individuals but also organisations and particularly the communities".

At an awareness session organised by KU's Psychology department, experts stressed the significance of creating a conducive work environment to support mental health. Dr Nadia Ayub, a dean at the Institute of Business Management, noted that almost 60% of the world's population is in work and deserves a safe and healthy environment.

She highlighted that work plays a crucial role in protecting mental health by providing financial stability, fostering confidence and purpose, facilitating meaningful relationships, and establishing structured routines.

However, Dr Ayub also pointed out that work can amplify wider issues negatively affecting mental health, such as discrimination and inequality. She emphasised the need for government, employers, and stakeholders to take action to improve mental health at work.

Chairperson of KU's Department of Psychology, Professor Dr Anila Amber Malik, asserted that a safe and healthy environment is crucial for protecting mental health, stating that "supporting mental health in the workplace is no longer a nice-to-have, but a necessity".

The Biochemistry department also hosted events, featuring distinguished speakers and interactive sessions, to underscore the importance of mental health. Academic figures, including Prof Dr Shahana Urooj Kazmi and Prof Dr Darakhshan Jabeen Haleem, shared their expertise on various facets of mental well-being.

By observing World Mental Health Day, the University of Karachi reinforces its commitment to promoting mental health awareness and support.
